There is no denying the tremendous influence of Greek southerners on the Birmingham restaurant scene. One of those Birminghamians is Timothy Hontzas, a Homewood chef and restaurant owner of Johnny’s. His restaurant is one of the top meat and three lunch spots in Birmingham (along with a recent James Beard Award nominee) and he proudly incorporates his Greek heritage and influences into his menu.
Johnny’s Restaurant serves as a tribute to Timothy’s grandfather, who came to America in 1921 from Greece on a cattle boat. He worked his way up in the restaurant business before starting his own successful restaurant, paving the way for his grandson Timothy to make his own mark on Birmingham dining.
